Hearth & Home
A STEP BACK IN TIME PROGRAM
Hearth & Home
Traditions made by hand
You know that feeling when the garden suddenly goes wild and you’re staring at more tomatoes than any one family could possibly eat?
That’s where Hearth & Home begins.
This part of Step Back in Time celebrates the everyday skills that kept kitchens busy, winter cupboards and freezers full, and hands happily occupied — canning, preserving, baking, quilting, knitting, crocheting, and all those wonderful “someone really should have taught me this” traditions.
Think:
- Turning armloads of tomatoes into salsa, spaghetti sauce, and tomato juice
- Learning that wine jelly is a thing (and wondering why no one told you sooner!)
- Fall apples becoming apple butter, apple sauce, and apple pie — sometimes all in the same weekend
- Pickled carrots, pickled beets, bread and butter pickles… what else can we pickle?
- Quilts stitched with stories, yarn turned into something warm, and plenty of conversation along the way

Jean Thornhill cans her famous bread and butter pickles.
These gatherings are relaxed, hands-on, and meant to be fun — not fussy. No perfection required. Jars may not seal. Flour may end up on the floor. Someone will say, “Well… that’s not how MY mom did it.” And that’s half
the fun.

HELP SHAPE HEARTH & HOME
Meet us at the Hearth & Home booth at Old-Fashioned Days! We’ll be gathering ideas and taking a short survey to find out what you’d like to learn, teach, or try next.
If you can think of it… we’ll look for a teacher!
