John Finley (1910 – 1979)

Teacher, Hampshire High School

For nearly a quarter century, Mr. John Finley was a respected and caring presence at Hampshire High School. Known for both his intelligence and his gentle nature, he taught mathematics while also sharing his deep love of music as a band and choral instructor. Many students remember him as a thoughtful teacher who encouraged curiosity and helped them gain confidence in subjects that did not always come easily.

For some, that encouragement came to life in memorable ways. One former student recalls a field trip where Mr. Finley had the class measure the height of the water tower near the canning factory — using trigonometry to figure it out. Moments like that gave students a real reason for what they were learning and sparked an interest in math that carried into their adult lives. Whether in the classroom or in rehearsal, he had a quiet way of bringing out the best in his students.

Music was an important part of his life and his gift to the community. Mr. Finley served as director of the St. Charles Borromeo Church choir and the Hampshire Community Choir, sharing his talent well beyond the walls of the school. In recognition of his dedication, the Hampshire High School Class of 1959 proudly dedicated their yearbook to him — a tribute to a fine and dedicated teacher whose influence was deeply appreciated.
